This is the first post for this blog! Here in, I will documenting our journey from living in a country town of 13,000, on a 1/3 acre block, to a sustainable, self sufficient farm. I know there will be great times but also a hell of a lot of bad times. Where we are now, is chock full of productive plants and animals, from a wicking bed vegie patch to a large 4000lt aquaponics system. We have been here for a little over 3 years and started with a blank slate. The yard had literally a handful of small trees on it and that was it. First we put in an indigenous native garden, then the vegie garden, chickens, fruit trees, more chickens, more fruit trees, aquaponics MK1, aquaponics MK2, wicking beds and more vegies! We have fast run out of space and it is time to move on, expand and conquer!
Currently we are looking for a flat piece of land, no more than 1hr from work. The idea is to set the farm up while still working, and then as the farm establishes and the kids are out of school., resign and work the land! Although this may (and most likely will) take 20 years to achieve, it will take longer if we don’t start now!
A very exciting yet scary time! With two children and another on the way, you might think it crazy to make such a bold move, but as my wife has said, if we don’t do this now, we may regret it for the rest of our lives. We have talked about it for so long, now to take some action.
So in this blog, I will document what happens as we progress on our journey. I know it will be hard, but this is our dream and now we are living it!
